The recent developments at the EU Commission and the FSMA force companies in Belgium to consider implementing a private dedicated whistleblowing channel, accept anonymous disclosures, protect whistleblowers, and follow pre-described procedures. This to complement the whistleblower tools recently set up by European and Belgian authorities.

All businesses will benefit from setting up a private dedicated whistleblowing channel or an ethical hotline, as effective tool to detect fraud or unethical behavior by an employee, company director or external service provider.

This workshop aims at providing answers to the following questions: How can whistleblowing procedures be implemented in a cost-effective manner? How to protect whistleblowers? What other quality standards apply to whistleblowing procedures? How to deal with accessibility, confidentiality, anonymous disclosures, interactive hotlines, language, security, labour law, privacy and GDPR?

Should you wish to attend, you are kindly requested to register your attendance with registration@ebbenacademy.be or contact@odc.law.

Belgian Parliament is expected to vote later this week on new rules on flexible working which will directly affect the HR policies of many companies operating in Belgium. Amongst others, the rules on variable part-time work, on flexible working schemes and occasional working from home will be modified. The modifications will require changes to work rules, company policies and employment contracts. Moreover the new rules will have retroactive effect from 1 February 2017. During this seminar we will also touch upon some other topics that are relevant for HR practitioners such as: granting cost allowances as well as guidelines on how to avoid abusive dismissal.

Our labour law partner Dylan Casaer will guide you through these new rules and will provide you with hands-on advice.

Tuesday, November 15, 2016, 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Culliganlaan 1A - Twin Squares - Madison Building – 1831 Diegem

What impact will Brexit have? How will the foreign policy of the newly elected US president deviate from or align with President Obama’s policy? The UK and the US are important trade partners and these questions call for a critical analysis. A proper response may either be a challenge or create an opportunity for Belgian business.

Ambassador Johan Verbeke, the former ambassador of Belgium to the UK and, most recently, to the United States, will discuss these topics with us. His views and insights will, no doubt, be of interest to us all.

Wednesday, November 9, 2016, 04:30 PM – 06:30 PM
Sablon Tower 14th floor - Rue Joseph Stevens 7 - 1000 Brussels

In cooperation with our firm and topic introduced by Werner Vanderhaeghe, lawyer, Senior Partner at Olislaegers & De Creus, Director of companies, former General Counsel at Agfa-Gevaert and Bekaert, former partner at White & Case.

Corporate governance has become a global management issue and unfortunately for some, so too has managing corporate crisis. Dramatic changes since the new Millennium in both the criminal and civil arenas across the globe has made the process of responding to corporate wrongdoing an even more complex affair. Settlements, penalties and fines can be enormous, as are the reputational costs to the business. VW Dieselgate is a case in point.

At the invitation of ETION – Forum voor Geëngageerd Ondernemen, Werner Vanderhaeghe spoke at an informal gathering of directors and CEO’s of a number of listed and non-listed companies on the topic of director’s liability, past experience, current trends and future challenges.
